CRAFT: Moose Antler Headbands!

I have had this simple but fun craft planned for months! I have been awaiting the right opportunity (season) to present this storytime session for two reasons: the moose antler craft (I love creating storytime crafts that enhance the session and act as take home prop that enhances the extension activity sheets I pass out at the start of storytime) and the fact I can sign, “Lions, Tigers, Bears…MOOSE!” In order to create my masterpiece, I sketched a quick set of templates and put my teen interns to work tracing and cutting. By chance, the former Children’s Librarian stopped by the library and revealed that there were DOZENS of moose antler headbands left over from the 2010 Collaborative Summer Library Program: “Make a Splash @ Your Library”. Apparently, she’d ordered so many that she was unable to use them all in the three plus years since then and had squirreled them away in a dark corner of the library’s basement. Ultimately, my teen interns lucked out, and my munchkins got to color their moose antlers instead of pasting them together. Win. Win. My munchkins enjoyed their antlers so much, that I had several wear them to the Monthly Children’s Craft at the library the following day.

REVIEW:

Every once in awhile, the stars align and I give a PERFECT storytime performance. This was the case during all three moose-themed storytime sessions. The books were a big hit…particularly Phyllis Root’s book, Looking for a Moose. The children’s eyes were glued to each page as they sought out the elusive moose. As for Arlo Guthrie’s Mooses Come Walking, I used this story as a teaching opportunity to explain why the word, “moose” is both used in reference to one moose and a herd of moose. The extension activities went over well too, and the children got a kick out of learning how to sign, “Lions, Tigers, Bears…Moose!”
