CRAFT: Letter “Qq” Quail!

Letter Q Quail

This week’s Letter “Q” craft was based on a prototype I found on Education.com. I drew a simplified version using images obtained from National Geographic Online as a reference guide. Unfortunately, I think my finished product more closely resembles a pigeon (without feet…how did I forget feet?!?). I’m lucky my preschoolers are pretty forgiving when it comes to the craft portion of storytime. They’re usually very excited with whatever I have planned. Crayons, markers, and colored construction paper were provided.

REVIEW:

I had a really hard time coming up with this week’s storytime outline. Some alphabet letter’s do not lend themselves to alphabet-centric storytimes! I spent a long time scouring the web, various OPACs and A to Zoo to find related picture books and extension activities. My preschoolers at the child development center loved The Recess Queen. Quack and Count went over well, but I got the impression the math was a bit advanced for their age group (they’re between the ages of 3-4 years old). The extension activities were a success. The kids were delighted by my buck toothed, mouse finger puppet (part of a set my father purchased from IKEA as a gift) and demanded I perform Quiet Mouse multiple times. They had a blast using the shakers and pom-poms, did not hesitate to create a cacophony of sounds. We concluded storytime with selected readings from  The Quiet Book, which I read in a mock whisper while my preschooler’s “shushed me.”
